I often like to sit on the windowsill of New Cabel Hall and sip on my cup of hot noodles.
Instant noodles are probably the most popular instant noodles in East Asia. While living in Charlottesville, I often daydreamed about the variety of instant noodles I studied during a year in Japan. Every time I go to the grocery store, I always grab a few boxes of noodles. I prefer noodles in cups or bowls over bagged noodles because I love the ease of boiling dry noodles in a container and waiting three minutes when I’m hungry.
Most instant noodles in the US can also be microwaved. This solves the problem of getting hot water straight from a faucet or dispenser in the US since I have easy access to hot water in Japan. Whether I need to rush to class during the day or get tired of homework at night, instant noodles always give me warmth and comfort. Also, most brands are very cheap and easy to store because they don’t require refrigeration. Especially towards the end of the semester, instant noodles are ideal as we are all very busy with our studies and can go over budget. After scouring supermarkets in Charlottesville for various brands of instant noodles, here are my tips to try when you’re craving Asian convenience food.
As the creator of instant noodles, Nissin will never live up to the expectations of instant noodle lovers. After 50 years of making cup noodles, it is still one of the top three instant noodles in Japan. Among the many flavors developed by Nissin, I like the seafood flavor the most. I was amazed when I saw that it was sold at Kroger for only $1.49 per serving, which is almost the price it sells for in Japan. The broth has a subtle shrimp flavor that complements dried crabs, squid, cabbage, and eggs. The original, which uses seafood instead of pork, is also worth a try. I usually take a mug for lunch on days when I have multiple activities because they are small enough to fit in my backpack. At noon, I add water to it at the fountain. I often enjoy sitting on the windowsill at New Cabell Hall and sipping hot noodles after the Rising Roll has been microwaved for three minutes.
Nongshim is a famous instant noodle brand in Korea. Tonkotsu means “pork bone” in Japanese. Since the Japanese usually use pork bones for soup, pork bones have gradually become an abbreviation for “tonk bone soup” in Japanese. The base of pork bone soup in a bowl is usually quite thick, so I usually only use half for one serving. My favorite dish was noodles, the noodles were just as chewy as they were in the restaurant. There are also tips on how to cook noodles to your liking. I like to sprinkle it with my favorite grilled seaweed and custard, which I take separately from the bowl, for an extra variety of flavor. As a person who cannot eat spicy, I put only a quarter of the fire seasoning into the cup. There are different combinations for everyone to find the best way to enjoy this bowl of noodle soup.
At first, when I stumbled upon these instant noodles at Kroger, I doubted it was worth my appetite since I had never tried it in China or Japan before. However, when I took my first bite, I decided to add it to my list of the best instant noodles. Roasting like a no-broth dish always gives me a more concentrated, full-bodied flavor. So when I get a little tired of the noodle soup, I can switch to this fried teriyaki. Teriyaki is a Japanese word that refers to the technique of grilling food with soy sauce and sugar. I highly recommend this stir-fry for those who love Japanese hot pots, as teriyaki is a commonly used sauce in American hogo. Plus, these mugs are only $0.99 per pack at Kroger, which is a great deal for delicious flavors. In addition to Teriyaki, Nissin Stir Fry also offers Korean BBQ, Sweet Chili, and Spicy Garlic Chicken flavors, so there’s something for everyone.
Have food allergies or dietary restrictions? Don’t worry. Pho’nomenal Pho Noodle Bowl is gluten, dairy, soy and monosodium glutamate free. Pho is a Vietnamese soup consisting of broth, rice noodles, herbs and meat. This quick and delicious cup of pho provides a taste of Vietnamese cuisine with a lighter flavor than the instant noodles I recommended above. In addition, pho may be a healthier option as it is not fried but dried before being packaged. Before coming to the US, I didn’t really have any idea about instant noodles, especially the Pho’nomenal Pho Noodle Bowl not only introduced me to the instant noodle category, but also gave me a deeper understanding of instant noodles as a possible healthy food choice. because they are often considered unhealthy because they are fried. It is worth noting that this bowl of noodles is prepared in just a minute after it has been filled with boiling water. So be careful not to cook it too long or the pho will become too soft and lose its al dente.
